  • The project and the series of actions taken following the devastating floods were explained at the Accessibility Committee meeting, which includes representatives from the public company and organizations and associations that represent people with disabilities.
  • It was also announced that in 2026, work will begin to complete the installation of accessible platforms between the platform and the train, and a new reference plan for accessibility will be developed.

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) presented to the Accessibility Committee, which includes representatives from various associations and organizations that represent people with disabilities, the actions taken to rebuild the facilities and infrastructure of the Metrovalencia network, which were affected by the floods of October 29th.

As part of this process, various actions have been carried out, primarily on the most affected section between València Sud and Castelló. Among these, the accessibility improvements at the new València Sud station, which will open in the coming weeks as a fully accessible facility, are particularly noteworthy.

The FGV Accessibility Committee meeting was attended by the managing director of the public company, Alfonso Novo, and representatives from the Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities (CERMI), as well as other organizations such as Helix, FESORD, COCEMFE, Plena Inclusión, ASPACE, ASPAYM, and ONCE.

Accessible and Intermodal Station

The València Sud reconstruction project was carried out as an emergency measure within the framework of the track rehabilitation contract for these facilities, which had a total budget exceeding €28 million. This project has resulted in facilities fully adapted for People with Reduced Mobility (PRM).

Alfonso Novo pointed out that “the new facilities at València Sud, currently undergoing reconstruction, include a pedestrian underpass that will connect the platforms to the parking garage, located next to the València Sud station, in a fully accessible manner, thanks to three new elevators connecting the platforms and the concourse.”

Once the works are completed, these facilities will allow València Sud to become a major intermodal hub with 506 parking spaces, 14 of which are designated for people with reduced mobility (PRM), and pedestrian and bicycle access.

At the same meeting, the managing director explained that, “as part of the reconstruction process, to which FGV is allocating more than 140 million euros, a new, fully accessible station has been built in Paiporta, and the access and pedestrian walkways at Picanya have been improved.”

Access Platforms Between Platforms and Trains

Among the projects announced for 2026 is the start of the first phase of work to complete the installation of platforms that facilitate access for People with Reduced Mobility (PRM) from the station platform to the train.

This equipment consists of a fixed access point to the first door of each train and is currently installed in more than half of the metro stations, specifically in 57% of these facilities.

This project completes the installation of this equipment and will be carried out between 2026 and 2027, with a budget of approximately two million euros, until the installation work is finished in all stations of the Valencia metro network and its metropolitan area, the managing director of FGV pointed out.

New Accessibility Plan

At this same meeting, the need for FGV to develop a new Accessibility Plan was raised. Its creation has been postponed due to the ongoing reconstruction work. The aim of this plan is to outline the new actions and initiatives planned in this area for the coming years, adapted to current regulations.

Finally, it was announced that FGV will provide training courses for its employees on accessibility and how to assist people with disabilities in emergency situations.
