  • On World Bicycle Day, the public company is committed to combined journeys as opposed to other motorised modes of transport.
  • The bicycle racks are located in Torrent Avinguda, Empalme, Alboraya-Peris Aragó and Quart de Poblet in Valencia and in Benidorm in Alicante.

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) promotes healthy transport and intermodality between the metro, tram and bicycle with the installation of cycloparks, enclosed compartments, with a roof to protect from the rain and equipped with safety measures that are offered in some stations to users of Metrovalencia and TRAM d’Alacant.

On World Bicycle Day, which is being celebrated today, the public company reiterates its commitment to combined journeys by metro, tram and bicycle as opposed to other motorised modes of transport that are harmful to the environment.

The 3rd of June every year is celebrated as World Bicycle Day thanks to a UN decree announced in 2018. The main objective of commemorating this date is to give more prominence to this means of transport so that this can somewhat alleviate the crisis of today’s world due to the pollution and climate change that the planet is experiencing.

Therefore, FGV places value on cycloparks installed; firstly, in the stations of Torrent Avinguda, Empalme, Alboraya-Peris Aragó and Quart de Poblet in Metrovalencia, and, secondly, in the station of Benidorm in TRAM d’Alacant.

The Minister for Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Arcadi España, has considered the implementation of this type of equipment and the response it has received from users of Metrovalencia and the TRAM d’Alacant to be positive. “These initiatives promote intermodality and make it easier and more attractive to use public transport, as in the cycloparks we can leave our bicycle or scooter for a few hours, in an enclosed place and at no additional cost, to easily use other means of transport such as the metro or tram”, explained the Minister Arcadi España.

In addition, the Minister for Territorial Policy also emphasised the commitment of the Generalitat to sustainable mobility and said that “it is very important to continue to provide facilities for people to choose public transport and sustainable forms of transport in their daily lives, such as cycling, to reduce emissions and the number of cars on the roads”.

Cyclopark operation

Those who wish to use this service must be in possession of a valid travel card loaded with journeys. The card must be pre-registered at www.metrovalencia.es or www.tramalacant.es

To access the cyclopark it is necessary to place the card on the reader located next to the entrance door. It is now compulsory to wear a mask inside the enclosure, as well as cleaning hands with disinfectant gel.

Bicycles must be left in the places provided for this purpose, without occupying more space than that reserved for each one. Cyclopark is a complementary service to the journey.

The maximum time a bicycle can stay in this cyclopark is 24 hours. After this time, FGV can proceed to remove it.

Lightweight steel and glass structures

Cycloparks are lightweight steel and glass structures next to metro and tram stations. Specifically, a light metal structure lacquered in white, a tempered glass enclosure decorated with translucent vinyl and a metal cover that protects from the rain.

The complex has an entrance door that can be opened from the outside by means of a contactless transport card reader, sixteen steel arches anchored to the pavement where bicycles can be secured, night lighting and a video surveillance system connected, like the access control system, to the FGV station systems.

Rules for travelling by bicycle

If instead of leaving the bicycle in one of the FGV cycloparks you decide to travel with it by metro or tram, there are rules for this, which users can consult on the websites of Metrovalencia and TRAM d’Alacant.

In the Metrovalencia network, on working days, bicycles may only be transported on the surface sections, unless they are folded. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, they can be carried throughout the network. During the Fallas season, Nit de Sant Joan (Saint John’s Eve) and other similar events, it is not allowed to transport bicycles.

To travel with the bicycle, one per person, there is no need to pay any additional cost and in order not to cause nuisance or damage, you must hold it and stand next to it. Occupying areas of passage must be avoided and it is forbidden to ride it through stations, on platforms and in other facilities.

The first and last doors of the train are reserved for access by people with reduced mobility, so you should avoid going through them with your bicycle.

In TRAM d’Alacant, transport by bicycle is authorised throughout the network and every day of the week with the condition of standing next to it in the empty spaces and complying with the rule of a maximum of four bicycles per unit, except with the authorisation of FGV staff. During Hogueras de San Juan and other similar events, you cannot travel with them. Bicycle journeys are free of charge and folded bicycles and scooters can be transported as hand luggage at any time of the day.
